First Edition

14 July 2020

This Analytical Report on the situation of women’s economic empowerment in Africa is prepared in the framework of the launching, implementation and monitoring of the "Campaign of African Cities for Women’s Economic Empowerment", initiated by the Network of Local Elected Women in Africa (REFELA), which is the standing committee on gender equality of the pan African organisation, United Cities and Local Governments of Africa (UCLG Africa).

The 1st edition of this Analytical Report documents and constitutes a reference for this Campaign, initiated by REFELA-UCLG Africa. The aim of this edition is to enable African regional and local governments and other actors interested in the economic empowerment of African women to have an overview of this question, its legal framework, the progress made, on the scale of the African continent, its constraints, women in this sector of the economy, including those in particular that limit their economic potential within their cities, and the challenges, which must be addressed wisely and urgently, in line with commitments made, both at the African level (Vision 2063) and internationally (including the SDD goals, especially SDG5: Achieve gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls by 2030).
